Planning.

It’s so important to have a strategy for what you will teach your students. Without a strategy, we run the risk of missing important ideas, teaching only the topics that personally interest us most, and ultimately failing to.

Events.

Events are a pretty big deal for most youth ministries. They’re a way to have fun, connect with students, get new people in the door, and create some excitement. Events matter, but we’ve got to keep things in.

Nerdcon: the all-nighter
This year’s fall all-nighter (or half-nighter) is nerd-themed! It’s packed with nerd-themed activities, games, decor and food ideas, and a teaching outline reminding students that they’re loved by God — and to love each other.
The Christmas open
This year, our just-for-fun winter event involves a lot of miniature golf and obnoxious Christmas decorations.
Spring retreat
This year, we’re giving you everything you need to plan a spring weekend retreat, along with the teaching content for a series on Jonah called Hard to Believe.
Golden glow awards
This year, our just-for-fun summer event is an award show designed to celebrate your students and volunteers at the end of the year.
Summer camp
Every year, we provide a guide to creating a 5-day summer camp, including games, how-tos, packing lists, planning resources, parent and volunteer communication, and the teaching content for a series called A Beautiful Rebellion.
Local mission experience
This year we’re providing a guide to creating a local mission experience, including how-tos, packing lists, planning resources, parent and volunteer communication, and content to help train and debrief with your students before and after the experience.

Volunteers.

If we want to be effective as youth pastors, we need to get really serious about investing in and empowering the volunteers we lead. When we do that, we multiply our influence, increase the capacity of our ministry.

Kick-of event
At the beginning of each year, we recommend planning a training event to kick off a new year of ministry with your volunteers. This kick-off event…

We don’t always think about celebrating or appreciating our volunteers as a form of training, but maybe we should! Because here’s the thing:…
Tools
You probably do quite a bit to train, encourage, and inspire your volunteers to do their jobs well. You probably explain things well, give them…

Parents.

When it comes to parents, let’s be honest… we could all do a better job of engaging them. For some of us, sometimes even just acknowledging their existence would be a good step forward. But no matter how.

Communication
Sometimes when we think about engaging parents, we think about in-person meetings or big events. But if we really want to engage parents…
Discussion Groups
When we think about environments for parents, we often picture situations where we (the youth pastor or staff member) are casting vision or …
